An enthralling debut, Above the Fire crystallizes the relationship between a father and son as they survive a winter of isolation. Perfect for fans of The Dog Stars by Peter Heller and The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

Laboring under a shared loss, Doug and his young son, Tim, set out on a late-season backpacking trip through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. They find beauty and solidarity in the outdoors, making friends along the trail and falling into the rhythms of an expedition. But when reports of warfare and social collapse reach the ranger station, Doug—seeking to protect the only family he has left—withdraws even further into the backcountry.

The alpine winter presents its own dangers, as father and son must endure the elements, the solitude, and the ever-present threat of outsiders. As their isolation intensifies, and the nature of the country's disorder becomes more unsettling, their bond with each other grows more fierce. But as spring approaches, they must decide whether—and how—to confront the perils of a changed world.

A late fall getaway to Mount Washington for Doug and his son, Tim, turns ominous when park rangers report that communications with the rest of the world have suddenly ceased. Doug had planned the trip to the New Hampshire mountains after his wife's death. Now, without outside information to rely on, father and son hike to the mountain's peak, accompanied by a Danish family. The group encounters other stranded and bewildered travelers and finds that no one has a clear plan. While the Danes decide to leave for Canada and catch a flight home, Doug and Tim check into a cabin partway down the mountain, overseen by an older park employee. They're going to hole up over the winter, even after the employee departs for the season. Self-reliance will determine how well they survive this winter of extremes, but Doug's real struggles are more internal: how does he keep his own fear at bay and yet be truthful to Tim about a seeming end of the world? Doug must also deal with an unwelcome visitor, an encounter O'Donnell skillfully turns on its head months later. An utterly gripping debut novel about humans surmounting threats both external and emotional.

DEBUT Doug, a middle-aged widower, sets out with his seven-year-old son, Tim, to hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail through New Hampshire's White Mountains. Ostensibly a trip to introduce Tim to hiking, it becomes much more when all communication is suddenly lost and there are indications of fires burning in the towns they can see from the mountaintops. News trickles in, hinting of the power grid being knocked out nationwide by a massive cyberattack, and possibly a war. Doug and Tim, along with other hikers, wait things out at a ranger station atop Mt. Washington, expecting that everything will soon return to normal. Days stretch into weeks, however, and winter approaches. Many of the stranded leave Mt. Washington to risk the uncertainty below, but Doug decides that he and Tim will winter over at the Madison Spring hut managed by a warden named David who soon joins his sister in Vermont, leaving father and son alone through the bitter winter. VERDICT An extraordinary national disaster becomes a journey of bonding and healing for a father and son wounded by loss, in a work that is surprisingly tender given the terrifying adversity its main characters face.--Lawrence Rungren
