"Be prepared to stay up all night . . ."
Laurel Snow wouldn't call hunting a serial killer a vacation, but with a pile of dead bodies unearthed near her Genesis Valley, Washington, hometown, she'll take what she can get. Yet something about this case stirs her in unexpected ways. Like the startling connection she feels to Dr. Abigail Caine, a fiercely intelligent witness with a disturbing knack for making Laurel feel like she has something on her. Then there's Laurel's attraction to Huck Rivers, the fish and wildlife officer guiding her to the crime scene—and into the wilderness . . .

A former soldier and a trained sniper, Huck seems to have his own secrets, not least of which are his whereabouts the night yet another woman disappears. And when the body is dumped where Laurel can't help but find it, she knows this cat and mouse game is personal . . .

Once in the heart of darkness with Huck, Laurel must negotiate her conflicting feelings for him, her complex rapport with Abigail—and her mission to find a serial killer among a growing list of suspects and a danger that's far too close to home. So close in fact, Laurel fears she will never find her way back to the woman she once was . . .

Zanetti (Driven) launches a romantic suspense series with this pitch-perfect blend of slow-burn romance and adrenaline-fueled thrills. FBI Special Agent Laurel Snow is an expert in serial killers, but she’s the first to say she’s no expert in ordinary people. She doesn’t quite get them, many of them don’t get her, and she’s fine with that. A panicked call from her mother draws her back to her Genesis Valley, Wash., hometown, where her uncle Carl has been accused of murder after a number of bodies were uncovered on a local mountain. What begins as a consultation quickly turns into a joint investigation with both local law enforcement and the Fish and Wildlife office, particularly Capt. Huck Rivers, as more victims are found. Complicating matters is Laurel’s introduction to an enigmatic witness, Abigail Caine, a woman who terrifies and intrigues in equal measure. Both awkward Laurel and dogged Huck are refreshing departures from typical leads while still remaining fiercely independent and easy to root for. Their romance only bolsters the deliciously intricate mystery. Readers will delight in this smart take on classic tropes. Agent: Caitlin Blasdell, Liza Dawson Assoc.

Taut writing and Amy Landon's stellar narration create a cinematic listen for fans of serial murder mysteries. FBI Profiler Laurel Snow returns to her hometown in Washington state to investigate a cluster of bodies discovered in the wilderness. The many action scenes are adroitly voiced with high tension and quick pacing. Landon's emotional nuance as a performer is highlighted whenever she portrays the emotionally unavailable investigator, Huck Rivers, who guides Laurel through the crime scenes. Landon conveys his hypermasculine yet distant allure while avoiding a stereotypical gruff performance. Landon makes romantic scenes, which in less adept hands might sound laughable, sizzle realistically. Once Laurel is targeted personally, listeners will have a hard time pressing stop until the killer is revealed. J.T. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine
